Eris' Graduate Programme future-proofs career prospects for young talent in the real estate industry

Eris' Graduate Programme, which has been running since 2008 - and having produced more than 70+  successful graduates - does so much more than simply bridge the gap between university and the working world. The internship is done on a rotational basis and exposes graduates to every facet of the property business over a one-year period. The ultimate goal of Eris' Graduate Programme is to future-proof career prospects for young talent in the real estate industry. Part of the stringent selection process is choosing candidates who can help the company as a whole provide practical solutions for challenges facing society. The focus for Eris with all of its work includes purpose-built development and regeneration of spaces; adhering to green principles and design; and continuously investing in tech-based property solutions to increase efficiency and capacities. In order for Eris to create societal changemakers who push the envelope on innovation, it all starts with the candidates the company chooses each year for its Graduate Programme. This is what some of the current graduates had to say about the programme.

For Kwenele Zuma, the programme aligned with his initial expectations: putting a 4-year degree into practice and applying the theory that he had learnt into real business solutions. "I have been granted the opportunity to learn about the different departments that bring about and keep a property operating. Rotating through the different departments has helped me to gain knowledge about the divisions and see how they integrate with one another. I am very happy about the colleagues I've met and the knowledge I have gained from them," he says.

In addition to rotating through the various divisions of Eris, it is equally important that graduates have a detailed understanding of all aspects of the real estate industry. For Goitseona Motloba, this was in the student accommodation space, which ultimately upped his confidence and creativity, just as a start. "The in-depth exploration of student accommodation developments has allowed me to network with other industry professionals, develop soft skills, and improve my time management, creativity and problem-solving skills. In addition, I've gained real-time market insights into the student accommodation market, which has increased my confidence in the working space," he says.

Ultimately, the aim of Eris' Graduate Programme is to help youngsters figure out their passion and the path they want to go on within the real estate sector. Says Mpho Kabine: "This internship programme has really enlightened me to which direction I would like to take in my career. It has helped me to know where my strength lies and what I enjoy doing the most. It has further helped me by exposing me to an industry that I did not know was so wide open, giving me the opportunity to find what I can pursue doing in the long-term. This programme helped me with networking - and interacting with colleagues really broadened my horizons and helped me to discover new career opportunities and areas of interest."

Futureproofing one's career by working in the real estate industry comes down to the skills that are taught and enhanced within the graduates, as Dimpho Mabitje explains. "As a result of this programme, I now possess a comprehensive grasp of the real estate industry. My analytical skills have sharpened, and I've cultivated invaluable soft skills including effective communication, seamless teamwork, time management, and proactive problem-solving." She adds: "These experiences have profoundly shaped my personal and professional development, moulding me into a more versatile and proficient professional within the property sector."

For Phumlani Matlakala, the graduate programme has been lifechanging.  "It has always been a dream to work with the best in the industry, so thank you to Eris Property Group for an opportunity to actually live the dream and learn and acquire skills and knowledge from the best minds in the industry," he says. The business skills that are taught in the programme would hold you in good stead in any career, but since joining Avison Young (a wholly owned subsidiary of Eris), Phumlani feels that his skills have had a positive effect on four areas specifically:

  1. Professional Communication: Effective communication is crucial in any career path. It will help me convey my ideas, build relationships, and collaborate efficiently.
  2. Planning and Organisation: Me being organised and strategic in my approach will boost my productivity and help me to achieve my career goals.
  3. Adaptation: The ability to adapt to new situations and challenges is essential in today's dynamic work environment. This is one of the most important skills to possess ― and it speaks volumes, especially in a dynamic industry.
  4. Critical Thinking: Critical thinking enables me to analyse situations, make informed decisions, and solve complex problems.

Networking and relationships were some of the highlights that came up time and again for current graduates. "The connections that I made with the other graduate interns and the staff at large ― and the support and mentorship I received from my department ― is truly unmatched.  Particularly in terms of work culture and exposure to a side of the property industry I had little knowledge about," says Mbali Mngomezulu. Fellow current graduate, Zandisile Mciwa, agrees, especially when it comes to tapping into the knowledge of mentors. "This experience highlighted the importance of seeking guidance and learning from experienced professionals. Challenges are inevitable for new interns, but tapping into colleagues' knowledge and support can overcome them. These lessons enhanced both my technical skills and adaptability, which are crucial in the dynamic field of real estate."

For future Eris graduates, Cassey Sengwane concludes with this advice: "Approach each department with an open mind, recognising the interconnectedness of the company's functions. Dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to every task, regardless of size, and seek to absorb knowledge across departments, fostering a commitment to excellence. Embrace questions as an avenue for growth, and don't shy away from initiating innovative ideas. Engage proactively with colleagues at all levels to tap into their valuable experience. Ultimately, view your internship as a mutual exchange where your contributions fuel your learning and professional foundation."
