In interview with our Asset Manager, Nandi Malindi

Every year, the Institute of Real Estate Management - a globally recognised institution established for the advancement of the profession of real estate management - holds a global summit to bring together its members from around the world. A few weeks ago in October, this year's summit was held in Texas in the United States, where members discussed the latest property trends and held education sessions about global best practices. It was the perfect platform for networking and collaboration. Nandi Malindi, Asset Manager at Eris and President of IREM South Africa, shares her insights from her recent trip away.

"My biggest takeaway from the conference is how smart buildings are providing maximum efficiency and productivity in dynamic and functional environments all around the world," she says. Intelligent buildings being responsive to demands by helping real estate managers to manage them better with smart technology ― namely access control, security, touchless maintenance and reducing ops costs for the landlords ― is another factor that resonated with her. "This is why I love IREM; you get to know what's happening around the world and see it first-hand. It helps visualise the future of where South African property market is heading to or should be going ― in order to compete or be within countries that are leading in property management trends.

Although Nandi's 1-year 2022 Presidency of IREM South Africa ends next month, her vision for the institution should live on long passed that. She says: "Real estate management professionals should be recognised as essential for the success of our communities, the people who use the properties, and the investors who own the assets. Our vision is to continue with our mandate to encourage the advancement of the profession of real estate management in South Africa."

Nandi joined IREM in 2017 when she completed her Certified Property Manager ® (CPM) designation course. The designation is for property and asset managers of any property type and it's an international certification. "Through its education and best practices, one becomes an asset performance expert and it's the most trusted credential in the real estate management industry globally," explains Nandi.

For those interested in doing the CPM designation course, IREM has partnered with the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).

The certification process has 3 components:

1. An educational component through an approved degree or the IREM courses

2. Passing a set of exams in Ethics and Management and Plan Assessment, as well as the CPM exam

3. An approved portfolio of evidence demonstrating 3 years' experience in commercial and retail property management

The institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) is a globally recognised institution established for the advancement of the profession of real estate management. It has over 20 000 members and has been around for nearly 90 years. It aims to lead the field nationally and internationally; promote professionalism; provide education and certification; and to uphold ethics in the property management and asset management field.
